The physics behind fly casting, and what differentiates it from conventional tackle, is that the fly weighs virtually nothing and the heft of the fly line is used to create the momentum to carry the "lure" as far away as possible. The weighted Clouser Minnows I predominantly chuck require wider casting loops and more force to shoot long distances. Hook a fly up to a spin rod and you'll have trouble casting it past your feet. This is a far cry from the delicate approach needed when casting size 22 tricos to big trout in shallow, gin-clear spring creeks.
If you are holding on to an old bamboo rod, I wouldn't suggest you run out with it right now and flail for big fish. But I do know that bamboo rods are not just antiques; they are very functional and capable rods. Obtaining a new bamboo rod may thin your wallet a bit, but recognize you are buying art, not just another piece of tackle off a storeroom rack.

I ran into Matt Schliske a few weeks ago in Denver at the Fly Fishing Retailer Show, a trade show attended by the most exclusive fly fishing companies in the world. Here was a young guy with a beaten trucker hat and sideburns to match tending to a set of impressively fine-looking bamboo fly rods - artistic pieces, he told me that he creates in his shop in Fort Collins.
When I think of bamboo fly rods, I envision tie-wearing anglers in black-and-white photos, casting Royal Wulffs to trout. When he told me that he recently hooked a wiper on one of his rods, I cringed. If you had asked me a couple months ago, I would have told you a wiper would turn a bamboo fly rod into splinters. Apparently, I would have been mistaken, as he landed the notoriously strong fish.
And surely, if you want one crafted for something as strong as wiper, it can be done.
To me, the rods I use to hurl flies back and forth and onto the water are simply tools. But that is as far as I go. Give me a tree branch and I'll try to make it work. I am not a connoisseur of these fishing instruments, nor do I pretend to be. Perhaps I can tell you if a rod is too fast or slow, or whether it has more of a tip action than a mid-flex. Give me a $700 state-of-the-art graphite fly rod and I'll probably snap it in the car door.
My reply? "I have no idea."
primary choice for high quality rod building. Graphite has since dominated the market, but there is a fresh resurgence of bamboo rod makers world-wide. These trout-bums/craftsmen/artists impart unique character into each rod they make and tailor their models for an array of fly fishing conditions and techniques.
