After a four-week car-buying spree fueled by the American taxpayer, hard times have returned for the domestic auto industry.</p><p>Ford, GM and Chrysler on Thursday reported lower sales in September, a throwback to earlier this year before the federal government stepped in with incentives of $3,500 or $4,500 to spur new car and truck sales.</p><p>“It was a more difficult month than we anticipated,” said Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president of U.S. sales.</p><p>Now the pressure is on to generate new showroom momentum. Pickup truck sales usually rise when the residential construction market starts to get busy.</p><p>Sales of the Ford Escape compact SUV dropped 5.1 percent from September 2008. Before August, the last time F-series trucks posted monthly year-over-year gains was October 2006.</p><p>“It may be an early indicator in a turnaround in outlook of small-business owners,” said Ken Czubay, Ford’s vice president of U.S. Domestic manufacturers spent $3,514 for each vehicle sold last month, compared with $3,232 in August.</p><p>But don’t expect to find Clunker-type deals. Including all domestic and foreign automakers, sales were down 23 percent for the month.</p><p>However Ford outperformed its U.S. He noted that GM’s 21 percent domestic market share last month comfortably led second-place Toyota.</p><p> “But there also is a viewpoint from GM management and the board that we need to be aggressive in the marketplace,” LaNeve said. That stacked up favorably against the biggest Japanese automakers: Toyota’s September sales were off 13 percent; Honda, 20 percent; and Nissan, 7 percent.</p><p>Even better for the Kansas City area, the two vehicles made at Ford’s Claycomo plant— the F-150 pickup and the Ford Escape SUV — continued to move off dealership lots. </p><p>If September was any indication, Detroit will keep pushing products actively. The region makes up most of Missouri and Kansas, along with parts of Iowa and Nebraska.</p><p>No one was surprised by September’s overall weak results, given that the Clunkers program that ran from late July through most of August pulled many prospective car buyers into the market before September. However, analysts noted that the Escape was among the most popular vehicles bought under the Clunkers program and dealers began running out of models by September.</p><p> The company’s Kansas City region posted a quarterly sales gain of 28.9 percent. GM, despite raising its incentives 15 percent last month from August, said it will not sacrifice profitability to sell cars.</p><p>“We want to gain market share on product and marketing, not on incentives,” LaNeve said during a briefing Thursday. But with new models such as the Buick LaCrosse and Ford Taurus on the lots and some economic indicators turning positive, dealers are hopeful that the industry’s worst months are past.</p><p>Industry incentives are back, too.
