Vettel's win shows how wet weather is the great equalizer in racing because it levels the playing field for teams with slower cars but more talented drivers. The reduced traction in the rain often negates most of the car advantages of the top teams and leaves finding speed up to the drivers.

The 21-year-old became the youngest driver to win a F1 race last weekend after starting from the pole and never being challenged in a rain-soaked Italian Grand Prix at the venerable Monza Circuit.

"All the people might be used to hearing the Italian national anthem for Scuderia Ferrari. This is very special, very unique for all the team," Vettel said. "I think they will never forget this day as well as I won't."

But, even as he led the final laps on the way to the victory, the German driver found the turn of events hard to believe. "P1 was still on the board, P1, P1 and a plus and I was leading by quite a bit, and I thought: 'You know, if you finish the race you will be winning.' ... But then I tried to focus again, the conditions were difficult," he said.

n less than two years of racing in Formula One, Sebastian Vettel continues to lower the bar. The age bar, that is.

Lewis Hamilton of McLaren-Mercedes recovered from a poor qualifying to finish seventh, one spot behind main title rival Felipe Massa of Ferrari. Hamilton leads Massa by a single point, 78 to 77, in the driving championship with four races to go.

"It might sound stupid but just the shape of the podium and to have the crowd underneath you, this picture I will never forget in my life."

Ironically, the win for Red Bull comes from the team that Dietrich Mateschitz, the energy drink company founder, decided to put up for sale earlier this year. Fortunately, Vettel will transfer to Red Bull Racing after signing a deal to replace the retiring David Coulthard beginning in 2009.

A day earlier, Vettel had become F1's youngest pole-sitter at 21 years and 73 days, after putting up the fastest time in a wet qualifying session.

The Toro Rosso driver finished the 53-lap race on the 13-turn, 5.793-kilometre Monza circuit 12.512 seconds ahead of McLaren-Mercedes driver Heikki Kovalainen. Vettel had built a 30-second lead but slowed at the finish line before bowing his head in the cockpit and clutching his helmet in his hands in disbelief. BMW-Sauber's Robert Kubica was third.

The win was also the first for an Italian manufacturer other than Ferrari since five-time world champion Juan-Manuel Fangio took a victory at the 1957 German Grand Prix in a Maserati.

The win for the Toro Rosso team is also its first after years as perennial back-marker Minardi. Red Bull bought the Faenza, Italy-based outfit at the end of the 2005 season and renamed it Toro Rosso (Red Bull in Italian). Toro Rosso is essentially the talent development outfit for the better-funded Red Bull Racing team.

Late Brazilian racing legend Ayrton Senna proved his point brilliantly in his first F1 season in a downpour at the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix.
