Hutton's display also includes a 1921 Ford pickup truck, a vehicle he recently sold to Roger Randolph of Randolph Engineering, and a 1931 Model A two-door sedan.

Car buff Terry Bragg of Kanawha City came up with the concept of the show in the early 2000s.

The last vehicle in Hutton's Ford display is a 2010 pickup truck equipped with a rear-view video camera for back-up ease, satellite radio, an onboard GPS system that responds to vocal commands and a cab-entry step that deploys automatically when the door is opened.

A record number of entrants is expected at this year's Charleston Boulevard Rod Run & Doo-Wop show, which runs through Sunday in downtown Charleston.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Fond memories of the 1950 Ford he bought while in the Air Force may have had something to do with the assortment of cars Carroll Hutton has on display at the 2009 Charleston Boulevard Rod Run & Doo-Wop car show.

"I talked to Mike Clowser and some of the other city council people of that time, along with [former Charleston public safety director] Mark Wolford, and we got some other people together, and this is what we made," said Bragg, as he watched vintage cars and car-loving people fill the Boulevard on Thursday.

"I'd seen what some of the nationally known shows could do for other cities, and I tried to think of a way of getting a car show to Charleston," said Bragg, who is showing his pink 1972 Volkswagen SuperBeetle hybrid at this year's event.

Hutton, who has displayed cars in each of the three previous Charleston Boulevard car shows, is showcasing the evolution of the Ford at this year's edition.

Next in chronological order is 1950 Ford convertible owned by Rick Akers, a friend of Hutton's.

"The guys coming back from World War II bought cars like this for their reliability, comfort and streamlined shape," Hutton said. "When I was in the military during the Korean War, I had one of these and a 1953 Ford."

"The Model T was also the first car with an automatic transmission," Hutton said, although drivers had to push a foot pedal to engage it.

"The Model A has more horsepower than the Model T, and a lot more comfort," said Hutton. "Unlike the Model T, it has a closed cab, roll-up windows, and a heater that makes use of the car's manifold and hot water system."

"I remember driving it from Denver to Charleston and back in it on a three-day pass," said Hutton, a Putnam County resident who grew up on Charleston's West Side. "It was 1,425 miles each way. That was a comfortable, reliable car."

"They've come a long way since the Model T," said Hutton, who added that his display is a tribute to his longtime friend, Midway Ford owner Don Kinneer, who died Aug. 31.

"This is the car that got America on the road," he said, gazing at his painstakingly restored 1919 Model T roadster. Ford produced cars before the first Model Ts began hitting the road in 1908, but the Tin Lizzie was the automaker's first mass-produced, popular-priced model.
